The Pit Fiend's Pet

"The 'dragon millipede' (Desmoxytes purpurosea) was first described in 2007 by scientists in Thailand. Researchers suggest the bright colouring acts as a warning to would-be predators, as the millipede has glands that produce cyanide as a defence mechanism."

Awesome!

Warning delivered.

Several well-aimed missiles meant that two of the harpies were knocked out of thye sky to plummet all the way to the jungle below. The third managed to reach the minaret and sing out to the party.

The paladin and wizard eagerly walked towards the voice and certain doom. Split-second choices meant the paladin was grappled to the ground while the wizard stumbled over the windowledge in the confusion. Soon all the harpies were dead and the enchantment wore off.

Each wall-mounted tower was searched in turn. Most seemed to be currently used as living quarters for the group of harpies so conditions were squalid. All walls and floors were grimy, if not filthy, and a foul smell persisted despite the open windows and availability of fresh air.

Several caches of food were found in small basements under the floors of the main rooms. Most contained the dead but two survivors were amazingly discovered - a man missing a leg and a woman missing a mind, both tragic victims of harpy imprisonment.

The search for treasure was fruitless as the harpies had no need for anything they couldn't eat. And even the item of value that the harpies were unaware of - the lower torso of a man wearing Boots of Levitation - was accidentally thrown from the window as part of a "tidy up".

In the roof of one tower, seemingly unknown to the occupants, was a small chest of black cloaks, all bearing a 3-teardrop motif which the party had seen before.

An infestation of stirges was also uncovered but the scout had the presence of mind to slam the trapdoor shut on the tiny terrors before the swarm was able to fly out in search of fresh blood.

Once all the towers were checked, the party left on their flying carpets with the rescued survivors back to Station.
